Behind the scenes: Blue Valentine. (x)
"I wanted him to wear a white satin jacket so he would be visible at night. It also gave him a sense of armor…When you work with great actors, one of the most important things for them to build a character is to know what they wear. And I thought it would be cool if he had an animal symbol on his [jacket]. I was showing the costume designer Scorpio Rising, because we were talking about the clothes people would wear at the garage – I wanted it to be very fetish. Ryan was there, working on his car, because he was building a car to understand the DNA of the motor. Scorpio Rising starts with the famous scorpion coming into frame, and Ryan and I were looking at each other, going, it’s a scorpion." - Nicolas Winding Refn on Ryan Gosling’s scorpion jacket in Drive
The whole idea for this opening chase was, I called it “diver in the ocean of sharks”, that to do a car chase but you never leave the car. Essentially, you’re always seeing it from his perspective or his aura. A bit like when you would see a scene with a diver in the ocean, you would only see it from his point of view and then you knew the sharks was all around him and so you knew when they were gonna come. -Nicolas Winding Refn
"How do you trust your feelings when they can just disappear like that?"

Cianfrance was adamant not to let production designers dig the hole for Ryan in the scene where Dean is burying his dog. Ryan dug it himself and an hour and a half later, “when he was done digging the hole, he broke down. And that was an unscripted scene, him crying at the table. He was actually so emotional and what he told me afterwards was that, that process tricked his body because his body was so exhausted and his body didn’t know that that wasn’t his dog. His body just buried his dog, and his body reacted in that way.”
"My Dearest Allie, I couldn’t sleep last night because I know that it’s over between us. I’m not bitter anymore, because I know that what we had was real. And if in some distant place in the future we see each other in our new lives, I’ll smile at you with joy and remember how we spent the summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds, and that’s what you’ve given me. That’s what I hope to give to you forever. I love you. I’ll be seeing you, Noah."
